I’m a mother, a wife, a friend. I have a full time job and a house to take care of. As most mothers will attest, those are only half of my responsibilities. It seems that I am forever on call to the activities that pop up during the week that myself or my daughter have to attend. I don’t have time to focus on myself. I have a back injury from a car accident and an ankle that seems to constantly break. Needless to say it’s been difficult, painful even, to find a way to exercise given my life’s demands. I struggled to find a fitness space that could not only work with my busy schedule and navigate around my injuries, but a space that encouraged me, followed up with me. A space that didn’t make me or my body feel like we don’t belong. Enter Core to Coeur.
Core to Coeur is a digital movement studio platform where movement teachers instruct live classes held over video (think a group Skype call — only everyone is moving!). These were classes that were in the early morning that I could do in my pajamas before everyone else in the house wakes up, classes that would fit during my lunch break at work in an empty conference room, and classes that I could do on the floor of my kitchen while dinner was cooking (in case something needed stirring!). Most importantly, these classes welcomed all of me- my whole life didn’t have to be put on hold in order to get my movement class in. If I needed to stop for a second to grab something for my daughter- that was welcome. If I needed to answer an important phone call — that was welcome (Thank goodness for the mute button during class!). Why? Because everyone in class had lives too that won’t stop for an hour of exercise. And so, what started off with one movement class — turned into five classes a week.
Convenience aside, these classes are FUN. At the end of the class, my daughter can pop her head in and say hello to everyone and I know she’ll receive an enthusiastic response. I know everyone’s dog’s names because their dogs are in the room with them during class.
I enjoy coming to the classes, and if I miss one, I receive a text from one of the many friends I’ve made as a direct result of these classes asking where I am, which in its own way, holds me accountable, something I never felt when I was a part of a bigger gym or even studio classes as the individualized attention just wasn’t there.
The biggest impact Core to Coeur has had on my life is that my back and ankle injuries, injuries that I’ve always had to consider before doing anything even remotely active, are now non-issues. The instructors’ ability to help me build my practice around these injuries has been a crucial part of my recovery as they never pushed me to do anything that felt wrong for my body and they gave me the tools to build up the muscles around my injuries.
Because Core to Coeur is so accessible, my body is stronger than its ever been. Seriously. I’ll be driving and I’ll notice a muscle in my forearm which I swear wasn’t there before! I’ll go on a hike, step on a rock, and my ankle won’t twist! I can pick my 5 year old up without worrying about my back going out. I notice a change in myself, others notice a change in me, my quality of life has exponentially improved, and it’s because of Core to Coeur.
If you are ready to integrate a movement routine that accepts you and meets you where you’re at, check out Core to Coeur — and I’ll see you on the mat!
